GIVE On Purpose

GoodSteps® is a for-profit business whose core mission is to direct substantial, sustainable funding to organizations currently engaged in the fight to eradicate hunger. With every product we sell, there is a customer-directed donation to either the Atlanta Community Food Bank or MANA Nutrition.

Wait, why did you choose a for-profit model if your core mission is to provide charitable funding?

It is our belief (ok, we actually know it to be fact) that there are already some really incredible (and established) organizations fighting to eradicate hunger and hunger-related afflictions around the world. The collective experience and talent of the folks leading these initiatives are inspiring and comprehensive. With that in mind, we decided to focus our efforts on creating a fantastic product (our flip flops!) and a sustainable business that we hope will provide ongoing funding for these initiatives for a long time to come.

Ok, but why hunger?

Well, there are a billion reasons! Literally, there are one BILLION people around the world that suffer from hunger-related health issues. This type of suffering comes in many forms: food insecurity, malnutrition, starvation and many others. In the United States, the most developed nation on earth, there are 15.4 MILLION children that live in food-insecure households. That is 1 in every 5 children! There are another 20 MILLION children outside the United States suffering from a preventable form of malnutrition. This preventable condition makes them nine times more likely than healthy children to die before their fifth birthday. The statistics are numerous and overwhelming, but the good news is there are some really incredible organizations leading the fight against hunger! As the idea for GoodSteps® began taking shape, I knew I wanted my company’s charitable focus to align with them.

Can you tell me more about the two organizations I can direct my GoodSteps® donation to?

Yes! The Atlanta Community Food Bank and MANA Nutrition are two incredible organizations and we’re extremely proud to promote the fantastic work they do.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank opened its doors in 1979 with the goal of fighting hunger by engaging, educating and empowering the community. The food bank utilizes over 1,700 volunteers per month and 150 staff members to procure and distribute over 60 million pounds of food and groceries per year. In Georgia, 19% of the population does not have the resources to provide enough nutritious food to live a healthy life – that includes 1 in every 4 children! The Atlanta Community Food Bank is leading the charge to provide food assistance for those in need in Georgia and bridging the gap between people who want to help and the many different ways to do so. A $1 donation to ACFB can provide four meals for people in need! For more information about the Atlanta Community Food Bank and its initiatives please visit www.acfb.org.

The purchase of one pair of GoodSteps® Originals will provide 48 meals to a person in need.

MANA Nutrition, founded in 2009, is a non-profit organization focused on developing and providing solutions to address severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in children. MANA also spreads awareness about SAM and the 20 million children it affects every year. In their Georgia factory, they make Mother Administered Nutritive Aid (MANA), a ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) made of a fortified peanut paste that has been carefully formulated to provide a child’s basic nutritional needs. MANA is served in a packet that is easy for a mother to open, easy for a child to eat, and as tasty as peanut butter. Roughly three servings of MANA a day for six weeks can save the life of child suffering from SAM. Studies have shown that 98% of affected children treated with RUTF were well nourished after six months and 96% were well nourished after one year. To date, MANA has provided this second chance for over 1.7 million children across 39 countries around the world! For more about this tremendous organization please visit www.mananutrition.org.

The purchase of one pair of GoodSteps® Originals will provide over 13 days worth of basic nutrition for one child.
